Fijian rugby legend Waisale Serevi has been appointed as the head coach of the Fijian Drua 7s team for the highly anticipated McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament, which will take place from January 16 to 18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka. This notable appointment marks Serevi’s return to coaching a Fijian team after a 16-year hiatus—an opportunity he describes as both an honor and a privilege.

Joining Serevi in this role is Sam Speight, the Strength and Conditioning Coach from Swire Shipping Fijian Drua. Drua Head Coach Glen Jackson expressed his excitement for the tournament, noting it as a fantastic platform for players, especially those accustomed to 15s rugby, to showcase their skills against some of Fiji’s finest 7s athletes.

The Coral Coast 7s is renowned for attracting top local and international teams and has a rich history of featuring rugby icons, adding to its prestige. With approximately 55% of the Fijian population expected to tune in to watch, the anticipation and national support for the Drua remain high.

Serevi’s leadership is expected to bring renewed inspiration not only to the team but also to the younger generation of rugby players in Fiji. His experience and deep connection to the sport promise to elevate the competitive spirit within the Drua team and the wider rugby community.

As the tournament draws near, fans are filled with hope for an impressive performance from the Drua, marking what is expected to be an exciting chapter in the history of Fijian rugby. The event represents more than a competition; it’s a celebration of the rich traditions, mentorship, and passion integral to Fijian rugby, fostering a bright outlook for future successes in the sport.
