Waisale Serevi, renowned as the King of Sevens, will be joining Sireli Bobo’s coaching team for the Fiji Sports Council (FSC) Under-20 rugby side as they prepare for an upcoming tour to New Zealand this month. The FSC announced this partnership as the team commenced their training camp.
Serevi’s involvement comes after discussions with FSC’s acting Chief Executive Officer, Gilbert Vakalalabure, where he expressed his willingness to support the Under-20 sevens squad. His vast experience and passion for the game are expected to be invaluable as he mentors the young athletes.
The FSC highlighted that Serevi’s addition to the coaching staff, which will take place next Monday, promises to bring wisdom and skill to the young players. This development is seen as a significant boost for the future of Fijian rugby.
The Under-20 team was formed through a rigorous selection process across five legs of the FSC U20 sevens series, which took place in various locations including Navua, Sigatoka, Savusavu, Rakiraki, and concluded at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva on November 30. Bobo reaffirmed the objective of nurturing talent from grassroots levels to ensure they are ready for larger competitions.
The squad is set to depart for New Zealand on January 29, marking an exciting opportunity for these young players to showcase their skills on an international stage.
This collaboration and mentorship signify a hopeful future for Fijian rugby, as legendary figures like Serevi actively participate in shaping the next generation of players.
