The Serevi Academy is generating significant enthusiasm among aspiring young rugby players in the Northern Division, particularly with its recently held coaching clinics at Subrail Park in Labasa. Esteemed sevens rugby icon, Waisale Serevi, emphasized the importance of rugby as a constructive outlet for youth, especially in combating the persistent issues of drug abuse.
Serevi expressed his gratitude to the A. Hussain Group of Companies for sponsoring his venture to Vanua Levu. The camps are free, aimed at encouraging children to leverage rugby to enrich their lives. During the sessions, Serevi shared valuable insights from his personal journey, underlining the necessity of setting both short and long-term goals for personal and athletic development.
The clinics primarily focused on enhancing core skills such as precise ball passing, constructing a robust offensive strategy, and mastering the ability to exploit gaps within opposing defenses. Notably, Serevi acknowledged his struggles in academics but highlighted how rugby became a medium through which he could excel and establish a recognizable identity, eventually earning his place in the World Rugby Hall of Fame in 2013.
He encouraged the youth to associate with positive influences who can guide their growth as athletes and warned against falling into negative peer pressure associated with drug use.
