Sera Kula, originally from Natauloa Village in Nairai, is currently married and resides in Waitolu Village, Naitasiri, where she lives with her husband and grandchildren. For several years, she has been selling kumala (sweet potatoes) and seasonal crops at the Nausori market every Friday and Saturday, which serves as her family’s primary source of income.
To prepare for market day, Sera and other vendors from her village head to Nausori on Thursdays, staying overnight at a designated area provided by the Nausori Town Council. This journey is considerable, requiring various modes of transport and long hours of travel, yet Sera remains committed, believing that hard work is vital for her family’s support.
Each week, she purchases around 10 bags of kumala, alongside other crops, to sell at the market. Despite rising crop prices, Sera remains resolute, knowing it is essential to adapt and find ways to maintain her livelihood. One challenge she faces is the fluctuating prices of produce from farmers, which can often exceed her expectations and hinder her profit margins. Sera diligently manages her expenses to ensure she sells her goods at a fair and profitable price.
She recognizes the impact of her work, not only providing for her own family but also contributing to the local economy. By selling crops, she plays a crucial role in meeting the community’s nutritional needs, especially for those who lack access to fresh produce.
Sera takes great pride in being a market vendor, appreciating the positive difference her efforts make in the lives of others. In addition to her market activities, her family also helps tend to their plantation, showcasing the importance of teamwork and support within the household. With six family members living under one roof, she emphasizes the significance of working together in cultivating their crops, ensuring a consistent supply for her market business.
This collaborative spirit not only strengthens family ties but also equips them to navigate challenges as a united front.
