September Shock: Fiji Faces Surge in Serious Sexual Offences and Police Concerns

In September, the Fiji Police Force recorded 118 serious sexual offences. Acting Commissioner of Police, Sakeo Raikaci, reported that the most prevalent crime was rape, followed by indecent assault, sexual assault, and abduction of minors under 18 years. Other reported offences included attempts to commit rape and defilement.

Raikaci also noted that six police officers faced charges for serious offences such as abuse of office, bodily harm, deception for financial gain, possession of illegal drugs, and wrongful confinement.

Additionally, he mentioned that police officers themselves were victims of crime during their duties, with 171 officers being affected by 219 incidents. Among these, 33 officers were involved in cases with multiple counts, including serious assaults and obstructive behaviours against police duties.

In total, 838 individuals were charged with various offences in September, including 48 juveniles. The age breakdown of offenders showed 486 aged 18 to 35, 266 between 36 to 55, and 38 aged 56 and older.

Commissioner Raikaci emphasized the need for community cooperation with the Fiji Police Force to combat crime. He expressed concern about the involvement of juveniles in criminal activities, as it affects their education and future. He urged families and communities to guide and mentor young individuals.

As the festive season approaches, Raikaci announced that the Fiji Police Force would increase operations and called on the public to adhere to the rule of law to ensure safer communities for everyone.
