A recent recreational day for seniors was held at the Housing Assistance and Relief Trust (HART) Nursing Home in Valelevu, Nasinu, organized by the Nasinu District Council of Older Persons (DCOP). This event offered elderly participants the chance to connect with one another and engage in both recreational and wellness activities.
DCOP Chair Randhir Prasad emphasized the importance of such initiatives, stating that the aim is to ensure seniors feel loved and cared for, addressing the pervasive issue of neglect many elderly individuals face. “What we have seen is that our elderly people have been neglected…So, we decided we would organize a recreational day for them,” Prasad remarked. This initiative aligns with government efforts under the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection to promote social interaction for seniors across various districts.
Prasad also expressed the intention to make this recreational event a monthly occurrence, thereby providing ongoing opportunities for seniors to engage with their community. Furthermore, Nasinu is set to host World Elderly Abuse Awareness Day on June 11, reinforcing the commitment to highlight the rights and needs of the elderly.
This initiative mirrors similar events, like the Elderly Recreational Day held in Suva, which emphasized reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation among seniors. Such gatherings create a nurturing environment with activities like health screenings and community support services, all aimed at uplifting the quality of life for elderly citizens.
The continuous focus on enhancing the lives of older individuals is a welcome and hopeful sign for the future, as community support and understanding are essential for tackling the challenges faced by this demographic. Events like these not only provide a platform for engagement but also foster a culture of respect and dignity for the elderly within society.
