The Senikakala Amazons triumphed in the Women’s division at the 2025 Flame Tree Waimanu Sevens, defeating Navy with a decisive score of 26-7 at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva last Saturday. This impressive victory not only solidified their championship status but also marked a significant moment for the team as they sought redemption after losing to Navy in their earlier pool game.
Captain Ruth Raketekete expressed gratitude for the team’s success, attributing their win to faith and determination. “Firstly, I want to thank the Lord for this opportunity and the talent He has given us. Without Him, we wouldn’t have won today,” she said. Raketekete acknowledged the intense competition, stating, “It was really tough from day one, but I thank the girls for giving it their all and pulling through.” Despite the scoreline, she stressed that the final was challenging, with Navy making them work hard for every point.
The captain highlighted the team’s resolve, saying, “When we came onto the field, we were determined to win this competition. The girls showed their love for rugby, which helped us prevail against a determined Navy side.” Furthermore, Raketekete earned the accolade of player of the final, which she dedicated to her teammates, emphasizing their collective effort: “This award is for my teammates. They keep pushing me to do my best; without them, I wouldn’t have won this award.”
In addition to the women’s match, the day featured several notable finals in other categories. The Bureta Young Boys captured the U20 Cup by defeating Shogun Fiji Highlanders Red 22-5, while the Bula Brothers Newcastle emerged victorious in the Senior Plate final against Marist Rugby with a score of 19-10.
