Six recipients of social welfare have been awarded seed grants as part of the government’s Welfare Graduation Program, which aims to transition families from dependency on welfare to self-sufficiency. The Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection has indicated that this initiative provides financial support for recipients to initiate or expand small businesses, thereby generating their own income.

This latest round of funding saw the government invest approximately $11,000 to assist families in creating sustainable livelihoods. Veremo Muria, the Director of Social Protection, distributed the assistance across various communities. In Nasinu, two recipients received funds to support their ventures in jewelry making, canteen operations, and flower arrangements. In Nalidi Village, another recipient was granted assistance to establish a canteen.

Additionally, in Delasui Village, funds were allocated to support both a canteen business and a small greenhouse nursery. In Dawasamu, Nasinu Village, one recipient was able to start a frozen food business, while in Naloto Village, Verata, another recipient received backing to set up a canteen.

Muria emphasized the importance of sound business practices and the necessity of keeping business finances distinct from family and cultural obligations, a strategy vital for ensuring the growth and stability of these enterprises. The recipients expressed their gratitude for the support received and conveyed their determination to decrease their reliance on welfare, marking a hopeful step towards empowerment and economic independence.
