Six individuals benefiting from social welfare programs are on their way to achieving financial independence thanks to seed funding provided by the Government’s Welfare Graduation Programme. This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection, aims to assist families in transitioning from long-term welfare dependency to sustainable income-generating activities.
The recent funding round saw approximately $11,000 invested to help recipients either establish or expand their small businesses. The grants, supported by the Director of Social Protection, Mr. Veremo Muria, were allocated to various entrepreneurial ventures, including jewellery making, canteen services, flower arrangements, greenhouse nurseries, and frozen food production. These businesses are spread across communities in Nasinu, Nalidi, Delasui, Dawasamu, and Verata.
During the grant handover event, Mr. Muria emphasized the importance of sound business practices. He advised the recipients to separate their business decisions from cultural and family obligations, highlighting that discipline and careful planning are crucial for ensuring long-term success.
The beneficiaries expressed heartfelt gratitude for the received support, noting that the grants would enable them to grow their businesses, decrease their reliance on welfare, and secure a more stable future for their families.
The Welfare Graduation Programme continues to demonstrate the Government’s commitment to empowering vulnerable households, fostering self-reliance, and creating enduring pathways toward economic stability. As these individuals embark on their entrepreneurial journeys, they not only work towards their personal goals but also contribute positively to the economic landscape of their communities.
