The National Union of Workers (NUW) is urging the government to review the laws governing the security industry.
This appeal was made by Fiji Trade Union Congress (FTUC) General Secretary Felix Anthony in Lautoka.
Yesterday, the NUW and Evergreen International Fiji signed a collective agreement covering all terms and conditions of employment for workers.
Evergreen International Fiji, operating as Wormald Security and Guard Force in Fiji, is a leading security services provider. The company specializes in electronic security services, including the monitoring of intruder alarms, access control, CCTV, and electronic fire detection systems. Mr. Anthony expressed concerns about the state of the security industry in Fiji.
“We are looking forward to working with them. We don’t have issues with Guard Force and certainly hope we never do.”
He highlighted the rampant exploitation within the security industry.
“There is significant wage theft occurring in the industry, particularly by small operators. We have a claim against one operator amounting to about $3 million owed to workers for unpaid overtime and unlawful deductions.”
He called on the government to review the law to ensure workers receive their rightful entitlements.
“We urge the government to review the industry laws to create a level playing field for employers and employees. More stringent inspections are needed to ensure full compliance,” he added.
The security company’s General Manager, Mike Jamieson, stated that with the signed agreement, they hoped for better outcomes for workers.
