A second fire in just two months at Valemasima Settlement in Votualevu, Nadi, has alarmed residents and raised concerns for safety. The latest incident occurred last night, destroying a two-flat dwelling in the same area where a devastating fire on December 3 claimed the lives of an elderly couple. District Advisory Councilor Mohenesh Singh informed FBC News that the couple from the previous tragedy had only been buried the week prior, and their family was still participating in traditional post-funeral rituals when they learned of the new fire outbreak.

Fortunately, during the latest blaze, which started while five occupants were inside the flats, no injuries were reported. However, the swift advance of the flames left residents unable to salvage any belongings. Singh expressed his shock over the recurrence of such serious incidents in such a short time frame, which has undoubtedly caused distress among the community.

In light of these events, Singh is urging local authorities to conduct a comprehensive investigation into both fires to uncover their causes. He is also advocating for enhanced fire safety awareness campaigns and the formation of community policing networks or neighborhood watch committees. Such initiatives could improve vigilance and help prevent future incidents, fostering a safer environment for residents. This tragic situation underscores the need for stronger community ties and support systems to safeguard against similar tragedies in the future.
