A recent arson case in Sabeto Village, Nadi, has left a family devastated after their home was completely destroyed in a second fire, which is believed to be linked to a dispute over grass cutting fuel. Homeowner Kaliova Saidrodro has called on local authorities to take decisive action following the incident, which saw their residence targeted twice within just a few days.

The first attempt to set the house ablaze occurred on December 11, where the family managed to extinguish the flames. Unfortunately, the second fire on December 12 was not contained, resulting in the total loss of their home. Mr. Saidrodro recounted his anguish upon returning on December 13 to find the structure leveled and all personal belongings destroyed.

The family’s living situation has become precarious as they are now taking refuge with relatives. Neighbour Taniela Varo, who attempted to assist during the initial fire, provided insights into the suspicious events. He recounted hearing crackling sounds that escalated into flames, and he observed someone throwing an incendiary object into the house. Despite his efforts to help put out the first fire, the continued threat loomed until the second catastrophic incident occurred.

Mr. Varo expressed his frustration regarding the slow police response, noting that the suspects involved are well-known in the community. His comments were echoed by West Police Commander SSP Iakobo Vaisewa, who confirmed that investigations are underway, although no arrests have yet been made. The authorities are currently waiting for reports from the National Fire Authority to further understand the incident and establish the cause of the fire.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of timely police action in community safety and the need for greater awareness regarding the escalation of disputes into violence. As the investigation continues, the hope is that justice will be served and safety restored to the affected family and the wider community.
