Women are increasingly taking the lead in small business ventures at Laqere Market, particularly in the seafood sector, as they leverage entrepreneurship to support their families. Among these inspiring figures is Silina Vunicakau, whose journey illustrates remarkable resilience and determination amidst adversity.

Following the loss of her husband, Vunicakau was faced with the daunting task of providing for her family of four. Refusing to succumb to despair, she ventured into the market, focusing on seafood products like seaweed, known locally as lumi, and selling refreshing juices outside Laqere Market. Her dedication and hard work have not only sustained her household but also facilitated her children’s education at the tertiary level.

Recently, Vunicakau achieved a significant milestone by using the profits from her seaweed business to purchase a carrier lorry, which she now rents out to earn additional income. “This is good money when you can enjoy the sweat, sacrifice, and effort you put into the work and reap the fruit,” she remarked, emphasizing the rewards of her labor.

Her success underscores a burgeoning trend in Fiji, where more women are stepping into leadership positions within small businesses. These women are transforming personal challenges into opportunities, thereby strengthening both their families and the wider community through their entrepreneurial efforts. This growing movement not only empowers individuals but also enriches local economies and promotes resilience in the face of hardship.
