Officials in Lautoka are set to enhance the seawall at Namoli Village to prevent coastal flooding, as highlighted by village leader Tevita Uluikavor. He explained that heavy rains lead to water overflow, exacerbating flooding issues when drainage systems fail and seawater floods the area.

Uluikavor expressed optimism that the upcoming upgrades will address these challenges. Village headman Manoa Ravouvou also conveyed gratitude to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for his visit last Friday, during which the PM confirmed that the seawall improvements and drainage work are planned to commence in January 2025.

Ravouvou pointed out the impact of climate change on the current seawall, which has struggled to shield the village from severe flooding. The PM noted that the seawall, designed to protect 440 meters of shoreline, has been overtaken by seawater during high tides, affecting the villagers significantly over time. He thanked the divisional engineer from the western division for providing vital insights on the existing structural issues.

Looking ahead, there are plans to enhance the seawall to better safeguard the community against rising sea levels. This initiative represents a proactive approach to climate resilience and community safety.

The commitment to upgrading the seawall not only reflects a responsive governance model but also offers hope for a safer and more sustainable future for the residents of Namoli Village, highlighting the importance of addressing environmental challenges.
