Fiji’s Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, Agni Deo Singh, has issued a stern warning to seasonal workers regarding the serious repercussions of criminal convictions on their overseas employment prospects. This guidance comes in light of a recent incident where three seasonal workers from Tavea Island, Bua, faced charges of being drunk and disorderly on a vessel during Christmas Day, which raised concerns among fellow passengers.

Minister Singh stressed that under the work policies of New Zealand and Australia, any criminal conviction will lead to the automatic termination of overseas employment contracts, effectively barring these individuals from future job applications, regardless of the nature of the offense. “Even if these seasonal workers reapply, they will not be allowed to work abroad,” he remarked, underscoring the importance of maintaining a clean legal record.
