Construction is underway for a new $1.7 million market and bus stand in Seaqaqa, promising significant benefits for the Macuata district’s over 12,000 residents, including those from nearby areas like Sasa, Dreketi, and Macuata. This project is set to enhance facilities available for 50 vendors, addressing longstanding challenges they have faced under makeshift shelters, particularly during adverse weather conditions.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, Turaga na Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere applauded the project as a vital step towards local economic enhancement. He acknowledged the difficulties vendors currently face with inadequate infrastructure, notably the lack of essential facilities like showers and restrooms, which have now been prioritized in the new complex’s design.

The construction is being managed by Permal Construction Limited, with engineering oversight from Kapadia Consultants Limited, and the project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.

This development aligns with broader initiatives previously discussed by Labasa Special Administrator Samuela Ligairi, who emphasized the urgent necessity for development in local markets. Similar past measures aimed to stimulate the local economy by improving infrastructure and vendor conditions, showcasing a community-centered approach to development.

As this new market takes shape, it offers a hopeful promise for revitalized community engagement, better trading conditions, and a stronger economic foundation for the residents. Improved facilities are likely to enhance vendor experiences and draw greater foot traffic, contributing positively to local commerce. Overall, the new market and bus stand represent a significant commitment to fostering a thriving economic environment in the region.
