The National Fire Authority (NFA) has raised significant concerns following a devastating house fire that occurred on January 12, 2026, along Nadogo Road in Seaqaqa. The incident resulted in the complete destruction of a six-bedroom home.
The Seaqaqa Fire Station received an emergency call at 1:50 PM from Ms. Litia Vatulili, who reported the fire. Responding promptly, a fire appliance equipped with a 2,000-litre tank and a crew of five firefighters arrived at the scene just five minutes later, at 1:55 PM.
Upon arrival, the firefighters encountered a six-bedroom gable house made of timber and corrugated iron measuring approximately 90 feet by 30 feet, engulfed in flames. Unfortunately, despite the firefighters’ swift response, the house sustained an estimated 90 to 100 percent fire damage and was completely lost in the fire.
The property belonged to Viliame Lawavau, who was not at home during the emergency. His 70-year-old mother was the only occupant at the time, and thanks to the quick actions of vigilant neighbors who alerted and assisted her out of the house, she was safely evacuated. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. It is noteworthy that the house was connected to electricity, and the fire broke out amidst rainy weather conditions in a rural, informal settlement situated approximately six kilometers from the Seaqaqa Fire Station.
Joel Israels, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of NFA, expressed gratitude that no lives were lost in this tragic incident but emphasized the crucial reminder it serves regarding fire safety. He highlighted the risks associated with unattended cooking, faulty electrical systems, and the necessity for preparedness.
In light of this tragedy, the NFA is urging the community to adhere to essential fire safety measures. They recommend that individuals refrain from leaving cooking unattended, regularly inspect electrical wiring, avoid overloaded circuits, keep flammable materials away from heat sources, maintain unobstructed evacuation routes, and ensure all household members are acquainted with their emergency plans. This incident stresses the importance of vigilance in fire safety to prevent future occurrences.
