Seafaring Safety Under Fire: Young Man’s Tragic Injury Sparks Investigation

An inter-island shipping vessel, the Lomaiviti Princess XI, is once again under scrutiny after a grave incident left a young seafarer, Samisoni Tadulala, severely injured. At just 23 years old, Tadulala lost a part of his leg, jeopardizing his aspirations to advance his studies in seamanship. He is currently receiving treatment at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH) following the accident that occurred on March 29.

Tadulala explained that the incident took place while the vessel was attempting to dock. He and two coworkers were stationed at the aft when the ramp’s flaps were improperly deployed, leading to a catastrophic failure in communication. As they attempted to lift the flaps, the ramp fell, resulting in his injury. He described the horrifying moment when he felt his leg bones break and blood pour from his boots.

The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has committed to investigating the accident, as they have previously taken action regarding safety concerns after a death on the same vessel in 2023. Joeli Cawaki, the CEO of MSAF, stated that the investigating report suggested the incident may be linked to the “wear-and-tear” of the ramp and will clarify whether proper maintenance protocols were in place.

In recent months, Goundar Shipping Company has faced growing criticism for its handling of workplace safety. A similar incident involving another seafarer, Samisoni Dauloloma, who lost his foot while working on a different vessel, has raised alarm regarding the company’s commitment to ensuring the safety of its employees. In both cases, families expressed discontent over the lack of communication and support from the shipping company following the severe injuries.

As investigations continue, the hope remains that both the shipping company and regulatory authorities will implement necessary changes to enhance safety measures for maritime workers going forward. This situation shines a light on the importance of proactive safety protocols in preventing future tragedies and ensuring the well-being of seafarers.
