Levuka-I-Gau villager Metuisela Ratauluka has received a significant boost to his family’s livelihood through the government’s Seafaring Entrepreneurial Assistance Program, which provided him with a boat and engine under a cost-sharing arrangement. Ratauluka expressed optimism about the impact this support will have, stating it will enable his family to transport fish and produce directly to Suva, thereby reducing their dependence on more expensive larger vessels.

This enhancement in transportation is set to yield multiple benefits. Not only does it promise to save costs, but it also aims to increase his family’s income and secure a more stable future. Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management Moses Bulitavu emphasized the importance of the SEA Program, highlighting that it equips maritime communities with essential tools to broaden their economic opportunities.

Bulitavu noted that supporting individual families like Ratauluka’s is vital for the community as a whole. Improved transport options enable fishermen and farmers to reach markets more efficiently, which can lead to increased earnings and a stronger economic foundation. The SEA Program is an integral part of the ministry’s overall strategy to enhance income-generating activities and improve livelihoods throughout rural and maritime regions, signaling a hopeful future for local communities.
