Scouts from leading secondary schools in Suva recently visited Labasa to seek out promising young athletes from local primary schools. Among the participating secondary schools were Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School and Adi Cakobau School, both of which achieved victory in the boys’ and girls’ divisions at the recent secondary school athletics competition.

Penaia Tunayau, the athletics manager for Labasa Primary School, shared that scouts, alongside teachers and parents, have been actively engaging with the young athletes to assess their skills and potential. He noted, “The athletes’ performance matches the standards of primary schools in Suva.” This observation underscores the region’s emerging talent, which Tunayau believes is pivotal for students’ future success in secondary school athletics.

Although the current local facilities are considered sufficient, Tunayau emphasized the need for larger tracks and enhanced resources to foster athlete development further. He remarked, “With the North producing impressive talent, improving facilities could help elevate their skills even further.” The athletes who excelled at the local competition are slated to travel to Suva next week to compete at the national meet.

This fostering of talent in Labasa is a promising indication of the region’s athletic potential. With continued support and better facilities, young athletes here could develop into future stars on a national stage.

Summary: Scouts from top Suva secondary schools visited Labasa to identify promising primary school athletes. Local talent was recognized as matching Suva standards, with a focus on developing better facilities to further enhance athlete performance. Selected athletes will participate in a national meet in Suva next week.
