Scouts from leading secondary schools in athletics visited Labasa with the aim of discovering promising young athletes from local primary schools. Notable institutions such as Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School and Adi Cakobau School, which recently excelled in both boys’ and girls’ divisions at the secondary school athletics competition, were represented during this initiative.
Penaia Tunayau, the athletic manager of Labasa Primary School, emphasized the collaborative effort among scouts, teachers, and parents to assess the skills and potential of local athletes. He noted that many of the athletes are performing at a level comparable to their peers in Suva’s primary schools, which indicates a strong foundation of talent in the region.
Tunayau highlighted the importance of such competitions, stating that they are crucial for nurturing future successes for students entering secondary school athletics. The impressive performances of local athletes demonstrate the developing talent pool in Labasa, although he pointed out the need for improved facilities, such as larger tracks and enhanced resources, to better support this growth.
Looking ahead, athletes selected from this competition will have the opportunity to represent Labasa at the national meet in Suva next week, marking a significant step in their athletic journeys.
This initiative not only showcases the existing talent in Labasa but also presents a hopeful future for the athletes, who may benefit from increased investment in facilities that could further develop their skills. As more young athletes gain recognition, it reinforces the idea that the regions outside of Suva are cultivating promising talents ready to shine on larger platforms.
