Former All Blacks head coach Scott Robertson is set to make a rapid return to elite rugby as he has been appointed head coach of the Barbarians for their highly anticipated northern hemisphere tour this June. Robertson, who concluded his two-year stint with the All Blacks in January, will take the reins of the invitational team as they prepare to face world champions South Africa in Port Elizabeth on June 20, followed by a match against Wales at Twickenham Stadium on June 27.

Expressing his excitement, Robertson stated, “The Barbarians brings the rugby world together, so it’s special to be a part of it and to honour the jersey.” The 51-year-old is regarded as one of the most sought-after coaches in world rugby, having led the Crusaders to an impressive seven consecutive Super Rugby titles from 2017 to 2023. This will not be his first experience with the Barbarians, as he has previously coached the side on four occasions.

Although New Zealand Rugby included a non-compete clause in Robertson’s exit agreement, restricting him from leading a top-tier Test rival until early 2027, there are indications he may take up another international role sooner if that nation completes its fixtures against New Zealand by 2026. Robertson has openly expressed his aspiration to win the Rugby World Cup with both New Zealand and another country, underscoring his ongoing pursuit of success in the rugby coaching arena.

For the upcoming matches, Robertson will collaborate with Argentina’s head coach Felipe Contepomi, adding further depth to the Barbarians’ coaching lineup. This exciting partnership, along with the prestigious matches ahead, positions the Barbarians as a formidable force for the tour, igniting enthusiasm among rugby fans worldwide.
