The Flying Fijians may have the opportunity to host a Test match against Scotland during the July Test matches in 2025. This possibility was brought to light by Scotland’s head coach, Gregor Townsend, in a recent interview. He mentioned that the Scottish team is planning a summer tour to the South Seas in 2025, which will likely include at least one Test match in Fiji.

Scotland recently faced Fiji in the Autumn Nations Test Series, achieving a comfortable victory with a score of 57-17, and wrapped up the series with a win against Australia. This match would mark the first time Scotland has played in Fiji since 2017.

Townsend stated, “The summer tour that we are organising is to go to the South Seas. We believe Fiji is definitely one of the games.” The goal is to play two Test matches during this tour, and Townsend hinted at the possibility of scheduling additional games in either New Zealand or other Pacific Islands.

Historically, the Flying Fijians have enjoyed success against Scotland, with their first Test victory over the Scots occurring in 1998, followed by another in 2017, both held in Suva.

The proposed encounter against Scotland may take place after Fiji’s warm-up match against Australia on July 6, 2025, just weeks prior to the Wallabies facing the British & Irish Lions.

When questioned about potential matches against other teams, like the All Blacks, Townsend indicated that a midweek game might be more feasible, leaving that option open for speculation.

Townsend also touched on his plans for the future, mentioning that he has yet to discuss collaboration with Andy Farrell, the current Ireland coach, regarding the upcoming Lions tour in 2025. He emphasized the rigorous challenges ahead, particularly noting the competitive nature of the match against Fiji, who are currently ranked among the top eight teams in the world.

In summary, the prospect of Scotland touring Fiji presents an exciting opportunity for both teams to engage in competitive rugby, fostering international sportsmanship and building on historical rivalries. This continued focus on developing competitive matches may enhance the rugby landscape, not only for the teams involved but also for fans eager for thrilling international encounters.
