The Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) is making significant strides in enhancing the nation’s sugar industry and bolstering farmers’ livelihoods. Minister for Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry, Tomasi Tunabuna, recently visited the institute located in Drasa, Lautoka, where he praised the dedicated staff for their essential contributions to research, innovation, and technical support.

Since its establishment in 2006, SRIF has engaged in critical initiatives that include developing improved cane varieties, conducting soil and leaf analysis, and testing cane health. The institute is also involved in pest and disease screening, crop diversification, producing disease-free seedcane, and managing various donor-funded projects aimed at strengthening the sector.

During his tour of the laboratories, research plots, and seedcane facilities, Tunabuna interacted with the staff about their ongoing programs and motivated them to maintain their commitment to excellence and innovation. He also expressed the government’s unwavering dedication to utilizing science-based solutions for achieving sustainable growth in Fiji’s sugar industry.

The positive efforts at SRIF not only emphasize agricultural advancements but also highlight the importance of a robust support system for farmers, ensuring that Fiji’s sugar sector remains resilient and prosperous for the future.
