Fiji’s Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro, has issued a strong warning to school administrators whose institutions have shown consistent underperformance, particularly those classified as ‘Hope’ schools. This initiative is part of a comprehensive strategy by the Ministry aimed at addressing significant issues within the education system.
In a recent parliamentary address, Mr. Radrodro emphasized that these schools will undergo rigorous monitoring in the years ahead as the Ministry strives to enhance Year 8 students’ academic outcomes. The Minister remarked, “We are closely monitoring heads of schools whose institutions fall under the Hope school category, which have consistently underperformed over the past three years.” He further revealed that a communication has been issued specifically targeting these underperforming schools, stressing the importance of accountability among school leaders to drive improvements.
Although the exact number of schools facing scrutiny was not disclosed, the urgent need for action follows disappointing Year 8 results across the nation this year. The Minister also expressed concern over the national pass rates in English and Mathematics, with only 57 percent of students passing English over the last three years, and an even lower Mathematics pass rate of 41 percent.
In response to these challenges, Mr. Radrodro stated that the Ministry is actively working to enhance these subjects, including a review of the teaching content and the structure of the Mathematics curriculum. A thorough evaluation of the educational curriculum is currently in progress to ensure it meets the demands of the 21st century and promotes critical thinking and problem-solving abilities among students.
The Minister reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to equipping students with the necessary tools for success in a rapidly evolving world. He also indicated that there has been a notable increase in Year 9 enrolments, a trend partially attributed to the $200 Back to School assistance program. Furthermore, Mr. Radrodro highlighted the Ministry’s commitment to improving educational outreach to maritime and remote rural communities, ensuring equitable opportunities for success across urban and rural regions.
He encouraged parents and guardians facing challenges with student enrollment to reach out to district offices for support.
This proactive approach by the Ministry of Education reflects a hopeful commitment to not only identifying and addressing academic weaknesses but also ensuring that all students in Fiji have access to quality education and the proper resources to thrive.
