Schools in the Lau Group will remain closed until further notice due to the extensive damage caused by Tropical Cyclone Rae, as confirmed by Education Minister Aseri Radrodro. This decision follows discussions with the National Disaster Management Office, underscoring the significant impact the cyclone has had on infrastructure, notably roads and bridges, which limits access for both students and educators.
In the affected areas, numerous schools are also being used as evacuation centers, making regular operations impossible. Conversely, schools in the Northern Division, Lomaiviti, Western, Central Divisions, and Rotuma are expected to resume their regular schedules. However, parents are encouraged to consider the safety of sending their children to school, particularly in regions vulnerable to flooding and other risks.
Minister Radrodro has stressed the need for school leaders to maintain regular communication with their Management Committees and local authorities to stay updated on the evolving situation. The Ministry of Education is closely monitoring weather conditions and will share further information as it becomes available, prioritizing the safety and well-being of all students.
This proactive response demonstrates the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to managing severe weather challenges, reminiscent of strategies employed in previous events. As communities come together to face these obstacles, there is hope that unity and vigilance will lead families through this difficult period, ultimately facilitating a timely return to normal educational routines once conditions improve.
This situation serves as a reminder of the resilience of communities in times of crisis and emphasizes the importance of preparation and cooperation in overcoming natural disasters.
