Thirteen individuals, including three students, were arrested yesterday on charges related to the possession of illegal drugs. The students were apprehended at two different educational institutions, highlighting the ongoing issue of drug-related activities even in school environments.
Police Assistant Commissioner of Operations, Livai Driu, reported that one school is under investigation after school management discovered smoking paraphernalia in their dining hall. The matter was promptly reported to the police, showcasing the proactive stance taken by educational authorities in addressing this serious issue.
Driu commended the teachers and stakeholders for their role in ensuring the safety of students and the community at large, emphasizing that the law will take its course in these cases.
In a broader sweep, a 33-year-old carpenter and a 47-year-old security guard were arrested at the Nadonumai Roadblock with small plastic bags containing a white crystalline substance. Additionally, four individuals were taken into custody during a police raid in Waiyavi, Lautoka, where law enforcement found white crystals, drug paraphernalia, and cash suspected to be linked to drug sales.
Further arrests included a 32-year-old mechanic found in possession of six bags of white crystals and a 29-year-old man who had seven branches of a plant believed to be marijuana. A 46-year-old farmer was apprehended at the Nadi Bus Stand with an extensive quantity of marijuana plants and cash, while a 24-year-old man was arrested at Ba Market with eight sachets of dried leaves thought to be marijuana.
All suspects are currently in police custody along with the seized drugs, awaiting the results of analyses as investigations proceed.
