Authorities apprehended a total of 13 individuals, including three students, in connection with illegal drug possession yesterday. The arrests were made across two different school locations, raising concerns about drug use within educational settings.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, indicated that an investigation is ongoing at a separate school where a manager discovered smoking paraphernalia in the dining hall and promptly reported the matter to the police. Driu commended teachers for their proactive involvement in ensuring a safe environment and reassured that the legal process would follow.
Among those arrested outside of the school context was a 33-year-old carpenter and a 47-year-old security guard. They were caught at the Nadonumai Roadblock with small plastic bags containing white crystals. Additionally, four individuals were detained in Waiyavi, Lautoka, after police discovered white crystals, smoking devices, and cash presumed to be linked to drug sales during a raid.
Other arrests included a 32-year-old mechanic who was found with six bags of white crystals, a 29-year-old man at a bus shelter with marijuana branches, and a 46-year-old farmer apprehended at the Nadi Bus Stand with a substantial quantity of marijuana and related cash. Furthermore, a 24-year-old man was taken into custody at the Ba Market Area with sachets of dried leaves suspected to be marijuana.
All suspects remain in police custody alongside the seized substances, as investigations are ongoing.
In summary, this incident highlights the ongoing issue of drug-related activities affecting young students and the wider community. It is crucial for educational institutions and law enforcement to collaborate effectively to curb such behavior, promoting a healthier and safer environment for students. Recognizing the efforts of teachers and school authorities in reporting suspicious activities serves as a reminder of the role that communities play in safeguarding the well-being of their members.
