The Ministry of Education has recognized that inadequate school infrastructure significantly hampers the ability of schools to adhere to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro highlighted the concerning case of Nabua Primary School, where students are faced with a hazardous learning environment.
According to Minister Radrodro, initial reports indicate there are ongoing issues with the school building, which was left unfinished by previous management. He noted, “We are currently liaising with the new management to find the best way to complete the building.” He also encouraged the new management to formally request assistance from the government through the Ministry of Education to help address the completion of the infrastructure.
At Nabua Primary School, the conditions are alarming, with many classrooms featuring rusted roofs and windows lacking blades, creating significant safety concerns for students.
To further investigate the OHS situation, the Minister for Employment, Productivity, and Industrial Relations, Agni Deo Singh, dispatched a team to the school on November 4. A report on their findings was expected to be published on November 5. However, the Ministry has yet to respond adequately despite multiple inquiries regarding the OHS report.
This situation underscores a broader issue in school infrastructure that requires immediate attention. It represents an opportunity for collaboration between government sectors to improve the educational environment for students, ensuring their safety and well-being.
By focusing on completing these infrastructure projects, the government has a chance to turn a negative situation into a positive outcome, ultimately enhancing the quality of education in the region. Investing in school facilities can lead to a safer and more conducive learning atmosphere, which is vital for the future of the students and the community as a whole.
