Repeka Koroi and Veronika Rabuliwaisavu, students from Vudibasoga Catholic School in Seaqaqa, Macuata, have received full scholarships from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) High School to further their academic journeys. This recognition comes on the heels of their outstanding performances at the 2024 Tuckers Ice-Cream Fiji Primary Schools Athletics Championships held last month.
Koroi, hailing from Korovuli Village, clinched two gold medals in the Under-14 category for the 800m and 1500m events. Meanwhile, Rabuliwaisavu, from Lomaloma Village, distinguished herself by not only winning gold in the Under-13 girls’ 400m final but also securing a silver medal in the 200m event.
The pair expressed their gratitude to their coach, Iosefo Apisai, of Nasealevu Village, for his support and guidance. Apisai proudly commented on the success of his students, noting the rigorous training regimen he established, which helped them excel in their athletic pursuits. His leadership contributed to their school’s impressive medal haul, comprising five golds, three silvers, and two bronzes among 12 competing schools in Macuata South.
Repeka, who was the Year Eight dux at her school, aspires to become a primary school teacher. She dedicated her accomplishments to her father, Epeli Balawa, thanking him for supporting her education and aspirations. She dreams of representing Fiji at the Olympic Games, driven by her faith and determination.
Veronika, just 13 years old, is also filled with excitement as she becomes the first in her family to earn these distinctions and gain a scholarship to study in Suva. Her father, a yaqona farmer, is proud and has encouraged her passion for athletics.
The head teacher of Vudibasoga Catholic School, Inoke Biaunisala, expressed his satisfaction with the progress of his students. Reflecting on a successful year, he noted that last year’s scholarship recipient has expanded to include more students in the current year, affirming the school’s goal to continue nurturing student talent in the future.
This achievement not only highlights the dedication of the students but also emphasizes the valuable support from their families and educators in fostering both academic and athletic success. The positive momentum established by their accomplishments sets a hopeful precedent for students’ futures in sports and education.
