SCC Staff Set to Boost Skills with New Training Partnership

The Suva City Council (SCC) has partnered with Pacific Polytech (PP) through a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will enable its skilled employees to enhance their qualifications and pursue skill-based certificates.

Tevita Boseiwaqa, the acting chief executive officer of SCC, stated that the MoU will benefit a significant portion of their workforce. “The majority of our staff are engaged in skill-based work, and this initiative will involve more than 200 employees,” he noted.

Boseiwaqa emphasized that the agreement would cover approximately three-quarters of the staff, highlighting the council’s commitment to a multi-level and multi-skills approach. He mentioned that SCC would conduct a training needs analysis to pinpoint specific areas for staff development under the MoU, with the goal of expanding their skill sets.

“The more skills our employees acquire, the stronger their growth potential becomes, rather than being confined to a single specialty,” he explained.

Peni Taoi, the founding director of PP, expressed his support for the agreement, noting that it complements existing MoUs with Labasa and Nasinu Town Councils, offering similar advantages to those employees. “Pacific Polytech focuses on technical skills and also provides opportunities for upskilling,” he added.

This new MoU marks the third collaboration between Pacific Polytech and the councils, further strengthening the commitment to workforce development in the region.
