Justice David Ashton-Lewis, head of the Commission of Inquiry (COI) investigating the appointment of Barbara Malimali as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), has revealed that nine individuals are suspected of either lying under oath or obstructing justice during the proceedings. In an interview with Radio 4CRB on the Gold Coast of Australia, Justice Ashton-Lewis indicated that his findings pointed to serious misconduct, including perjury and obstruction of justice, in facilitating Malimali’s swift appointment.

He stated, “I found that nine of them obstructed the course of justice, and that they also perverted the course of justice in the appointment of this particular woman.” These revelations raise significant concerns about the underlying motivations for her appointment, suggesting it was expedited to serve ulterior motives. The inquiry is closely examining why Malimali was prioritized, with Justice Ashton-Lewis suggesting her role was aligned with interests of “evil people’s designs.”

Furthermore, Ashton-Lewis expressed optimism that the Prime Minister would act on his recommendations regarding the implicated individuals. He noted the mounting pressure from opposition members to make the inquiry’s findings public—currently, only some details have been disclosed, with expectations for broader dissemination soon.

This inquiry is part of ongoing efforts to enhance governmental accountability and transparency in Fiji, particularly in light of allegations concerning the integrity of FICAC and its operations. Past articles reflecting on the inquiry underscore its critical role in navigating political interference and restoring public confidence in governmental appointments. With several important testimonies already taken and more expected, there is a hopeful outlook that this investigation could lead to significant reforms, fortifying ethical standards in Fiji’s political landscape.

As the Commission progresses, it serves as an emblematic effort towards a more transparent governance framework, reflecting a commitment to ethical conduct in public service appointments. The expected outcomes could lead to renewed trust in Fiji’s political institutions and help mitigate concerns of improper influences in future public appointments.
