In a recent development, Lynda Tabuya has been dismissed from her role as Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection. Inia Seruiratu, the Opposition Leader, has praised the Prime Minister’s decisive actions regarding the dismissal, while also expressing serious concerns about the implications of potential criminal behavior tied to Tabuya and the Commissioner of FICAC, Barbara Malimali.
Tabuya had previously claimed she has been divorced from Robert Semaan since 2016, which allowed her to exclude his assets from her declarations. However, recent revelations suggest they may still be married, raising questions about her honesty and transparency—qualities that are essential for public service.
The situation has been further complicated by the emergence of a private video involving Tabuya. While she argues that it is a personal issue between her and her husband, it contradicts her earlier claims of divorce and undermines her credibility, as well as that of her leadership role.
Seruiratu emphasized that Tabuya’s position as Co-Chair of the National Taskforce to Address Pornography in Fiji is jeopardized by these developments. Her role necessitates strict adherence to a code of conduct, and her actions not only tarnish her reputation but also that of the taskforce, which aims to combat pornography and protect children from online exploitation.
Moreover, concerns have been raised regarding FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali, particularly around her decision to close an investigation based on potentially misleading information.
Seruiratu is calling for clarity regarding Tabuya’s marital status and any possible influence she might have had over Malimali’s investigation. He insists that the integrity of Fiji’s anti-corruption institutions must remain intact, free from unwarranted influence.
He emphasized the need for public officials to uphold high standards of integrity and accountability, advocating for a transparent investigation into these matters to restore public trust. Seruiratu intends to bring this issue before Parliament to ensure it receives the attention it warrants.
This situation presents a moment for renewal and rebuilding trust in public office. It highlights the significance of transparency and accountability in leadership roles, which is key to fostering a healthier political environment. The call for an investigation signifies a commitment to holding leaders accountable, potentially leading to reforms that reinforce integrity in governance.
