Following the recent removal of Lynda Tabuya from her position as Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has praised the Prime Minister for his decisive action. However, he raised serious concerns regarding potential criminal activity and a possible cover-up involving both Tabuya and Barbara Malimali, the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).

Seruiratu noted that Tabuya had previously claimed to be divorced from Robert Semaan since 2016, which exempted her from declaring his assets. However, recent revelations suggest that they may still be married, prompting questions about her honesty, transparency, and integrity, which are essential qualities for public servants.

Compounding the situation is the emergence of a private video involving Tabuya. While she has characterized it as a personal matter, this contradicts her earlier assertions of divorce, further damaging her credibility and the public’s trust in her leadership.

As Co-Chair of the National Taskforce to Address Pornography in Fiji, Seruiratu emphasized that Tabuya’s compromised position not only tarnishes her reputation but also undermines the mission of the taskforce focused on preventing online exploitation of children. He expressed grave concerns about Commissioner Malimali’s role in closing a case based on potentially misleading information, calling for an investigation to determine whether Tabuya influenced this decision.

Seruiratu stated that the integrity of anti-corruption institutions must remain intact and urged the need for transparency. He is set to bring these issues to Parliament, seeking answers about Tabuya’s marital status and whether she influenced the closure of the investigation regarding her false declaration.

Ultimately, he asserted that the Fijian public deserves leadership characterized by honesty, transparency, and accountability. A thorough investigation into these matters could be crucial for restoring public trust.

This situation serves as a reminder of the importance of integrity in public service, as accountability is vital for maintaining the confidence of the population. With calls for transparency and a thorough investigation, there is hope that the truth will emerge, laying a foundation for better governance and public trust in Fiji’s leadership.
