Fiji police are currently investigating the leak of an explicit video featuring former cabinet minister Lynda Tabuya, who has formally lodged a complaint with the police cybercrime unit. Tabuya, who previously held the position of minister for women, children, and social protection, regards the circulation of this private video as a serious form of cyberbullying.

The video, which has gone viral, led Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to dismiss Tabuya from his Cabinet, a move he justified as being in the best interest of the public. The controversial video’s contents reportedly involve Tabuya and her husband, which has ignited significant scandal and public criticism.

Tabuya has criticized the leak as an act of gender-based violence, emphasizing that it exemplifies a grim reality faced by many women and girls in Fiji regarding online violence. In her statement, she said, “This is a grievous form of cyberbullying and must stop if we are truly committed to ending violence against women and girls in Fiji.” She asserted that sharing private videos between consenting adults in a relationship is neither illegal nor immoral.

Deputy police commissioner of operations, Livai Driu, addressed the issue by stating that cyberbullying is a serious offense that intrudes upon privacy and human rights. He confirmed that the investigation will be impartial, asserting that no individual, including politicians, is above the law.

While Tabuya has been removed from the Cabinet, she continues to serve as a Member of Parliament. However, there are growing calls for her to resign from her parliamentary role, with critics claiming that the incident has impacted public confidence.

This situation highlights the significant issue of digital privacy and the potential for online harassment, particularly against women in leadership roles. It serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding personal information and the need for robust measures to protect individuals from cyberbullying.

Moving forward, there remains hope that this incident will spark a broader dialogue about the responsibility of both individuals and society to stand against cyberbullying and protect those targeted by it. It could lead to increased awareness and strengthened legal frameworks addressing these serious issues, fostering a safer online environment for everyone.
