The National Legal and Disciplinary Sub-Committee of the People’s Alliance Party (PA) is set to meet today to discuss the explicit video involving former deputy party leader Lynda Tabuya. This follows her dismissal by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka on Thursday, after the video of her dancing was shared on social media during Christmas Eve.
Ms. Tabuya has acknowledged the video’s authenticity, asserting it was intended for her husband, Robert Semaan. However, it was previously determined by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption that Ms. Tabuya’s marriage to Mr. Semaan was legally dissolved in December 2016.
In a recent update, Mr. Rabuka will participate in the committee meeting remotely from Savusavu, where he will address the legitimacy of the dismissal of one of the Coalition Government’s senior Cabinet ministers. Ms. Tabuya has a significant political following; during the 2022 General Election, she received 11,965 votes, ranking fourth overall.
The inquiry into the matter commenced on Christmas Day following several complaints received by the PA regarding the explicit video. According to Mr. Rabuka, the committee has a 21-day timeframe to consider the case and provide their response. He plans to join the meeting via Zoom, with the acting chairman also offering updates on the progress of the case, asserting that his decision to proceed with the disciplinary action aligns with constitutional guidelines.
In light of these developments, the situation underscores the importance of maintaining professionalism and ethical conduct in politics. Despite the controversy, this incident may serve as a pivotal moment for the PA, prompting discussions on accountability and reinforcing the values upheld by party members.
