Opposition leader Inia Seruiratu has praised Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for decisively addressing the situation concerning former Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Lynda Tabuya. However, Seruiratu expressed significant concerns regarding possible criminal implications and a potential cover-up involving both Tabuya and the Commissioner of FICAC, Barbara Malimali.
In a recent statement, Seruiratu highlighted apparent discrepancies regarding Ms. Tabuya’s marital status. He pointed out that Ms. Tabuya had previously declared her divorce from Robert Semaan in 2016, which exempted her from disclosing his assets. Recent statements, however, suggest that they may still be married, thus raising alarming questions about her honesty, transparency, and integrity — essential qualities for public officials.
He further noted that Ms. Tabuya’s characterization of an explicit video as a private matter with her husband contradicted her earlier divorce claims, thereby undermining her credibility and that of her leadership. This inconsistency also jeopardizes her role as co-chair of the National Taskforce to Address Pornography in Fiji, where a strict code of conduct is expected.
Seruiratu also raised concerns regarding Commissioner Malimali’s decision to close the case based on potentially misleading information. He called for an investigation into whether Tabuya may have influenced Malimali’s actions concerning the case, emphasizing that the integrity of anti-corruption bodies must remain intact and free from undue influence.
He urged for transparency in investigating these matters to restore public trust and intends to bring the issue before Parliament for further scrutiny. Seruiratu emphasized that the Fijian people deserve leadership that is honest, transparent, and accountable.
Both Ms. Tabuya and Ms. Malimali have not yet responded to Seruiratu’s allegations.
This situation highlights the necessity for accountability and ethical conduct among public officials. The call for a transparent investigation reflects the growing demand for integrity within Fijian leadership, offering a hopeful outlook for restoring public confidence in governance.
Summary: Inia Seruiratu critiques Lynda Tabuya’s perceived dishonesty regarding her marital status and calls for a transparent investigation into her credibility and conduct as a public official. He emphasizes the need for integrity in leadership to maintain public trust.
