In the wake of Lynda Tabuya’s removal from her position as Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has praised the Prime Minister’s decisive action. However, Seruiratu has raised significant concerns regarding potential criminal activity and possible cover-ups involving Tabuya and the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), Barbara Malimali.
Seruiratu highlighted that Tabuya previously stated her divorce from Robert Semaan took place in 2016, which meant she was not required to disclose his assets. Nevertheless, recent claims from Tabuya suggest that they remain married, which casts doubt on her honesty and integrity—qualities essential for any public servant.
The situation has been further complicated by the emergence of a private video featuring Tabuya. Though she insists that the video pertains only to her and her husband, it contradicts her prior claims of being divorced. This inconsistency raises serious questions about her credibility and the public’s trust in her leadership.
Furthermore, Seruiratu noted that Tabuya’s role as Co-Chair of the National Taskforce to Address Pornography in Fiji is now jeopardized, given the need for strict adherence to ethical standards in such positions. He expressed concern that her actions damage both her reputation and the credibility of the taskforce aimed at combating pornography and safeguarding children from online threats.
Seruiratu also cast doubt on the actions of the FICAC Commissioner, Barbara Malimali, particularly because she closed a case based on potentially inaccurate information. He suggested that there may have been undue influence from Tabuya in this decision, highlighting the critical need for a comprehensive investigation to maintain the integrity of anti-corruption efforts.
In light of these troubling allegations, Seruiratu has called for clear answers regarding Tabuya’s marital status and whether her personal life has affected the actions of Commissioner Malimali. He aims to address these issues in Parliament to ensure they receive the attention they warrant.
Seruiratu emphasizes the requirement for public officials to uphold high standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability, asserting that the Fijian people deserve leadership that is honest and trustworthy.
While the situation is undoubtedly challenging, it also presents an opportunity for systemic reforms in governance. With a transparent investigation, Fijian authorities can reinforce the importance of accountability within public office, potentially restoring public trust and leading to stronger governance practices in the future.
