Opposition leader Inia Seruiratu has praised Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for his swift actions regarding former Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Lynda Tabuya. However, he has expressed serious concerns about potential criminality and the possibility of a cover-up involving both Tabuya and FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali.

Seruiratu’s concerns stem from what he perceives as a misrepresentation of Tabuya’s marital status. He stated that Tabuya had previously declared her divorce from Robert Semaan in 2016, which exempted her from reporting his assets. However, recent developments suggest that they may still be married, raising troubling questions about honesty, transparency, and integrity, which are essential qualities for public officials.

He further criticized Tabuya for claiming that a controversial explicit video was a private matter with her husband, a claim that contradicts her earlier assertions of being divorced. This contradiction could potentially damage her credibility and public trust in her leadership.

Seruiratu also highlighted that Tabuya’s actions compromise her role as co-chair of the National Taskforce to Address Pornography in Fiji, a position that demands a strict code of conduct regarding such issues. He emphasized that her actions not only damage her reputation but may also undermine the taskforce’s mission to combat pornography and protect children from online threats.

Additionally, he questioned the actions of FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali, suggesting that the closure of an investigation under potentially misleading information merits further investigation. Seruiratu is calling for clarity regarding Tabuya’s marital status and whether any undue influence was exercised in the case’s handling.

He insisted on the importance of high standards of integrity and accountability among public officials and called for a transparent investigation to help restore public trust. Seruiratu plans to bring this matter to Parliament to ensure that it receives the attention it warrants, advocating for honest and accountable leadership for the Fijian people.

In summary, this situation underscores the vital need for transparency and integrity in public office, which is crucial in maintaining public trust. As the investigation progresses, it is hoped that appropriate actions will be taken to reaffirm the commitment to these essential values in leadership.
