Three players tested positive for banned substances during the opening days of the 2025 BiC Fiji FACT tournament. On the first day of the competition, one player was flagged, and on the following day, two additional players were found to have violated drug policies, bringing the total to three from the pool of 48 tested players across both days. These findings were confirmed by Anushil Kumar, General Manager of Operations at the Fiji Football Association.
Kumar emphasized the seriousness of the situation, noting that positive tests on the international stage carry severe consequences. He reiterated the importance of maintaining a drug-free environment, stating that such violations not only affect the individual athletes but also their teams and the broader sporting community. Kumar’s message to players and districts was clear: the fight against drug use remains a priority for the Fiji FA.
The finals of the competition are imminent, and all teams remain determined in their bids for semi-final spots. Kumar also acknowledged the high level of competition among the participating teams, highlighting the intensity of the matches.
This ongoing issue resonates with trends observed in previous tournaments, including the alarming rise in drug violations noted during the 2024 FMF Inter District Championship, where 21 players tested positive. The Fiji FA is committed to fostering a healthier sporting environment, implementing educational programs on substance abuse, and promoting responsibility among athletes. These initiatives project a hopeful outlook for the future of sports in Fiji, reinforcing the importance of fair play and community health in athletics.
