The Police M-PAiSA Task Force is intensifying efforts to combat an alarming rise in scams targeting users of the M-PAiSA platform, particularly during the distribution of the recently allocated government Back to School Assistance funds, amounting to $200. Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew has strongly urged the public, especially parents and guardians, to remain vigilant during this potentially vulnerable period.
Emphasizing the necessity for adult supervision, Chew advised that children or unaccompanied individuals should not be tasked with handling financial transactions. He highlighted the risk posed by opportunistic scammers who may be waiting to exploit unsuspecting families during this financially sensitive time. “You don’t know who is at the sidelines exploring the opportunity to steal information or money,” he cautioned.
The Acting Commissioner also stressed the importance of safeguarding personal information, such as Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) and passwords. He noted that recovering funds lost to scams can be a complex and lengthy process often requiring significant law enforcement intervention.
This advisory aligns with broader initiatives by the Fiji Police to increase community awareness about scams, especially during financially active times like the back-to-school season. The Police have previously reported a rise in fraudulent activities that exploit popular communication platforms, including WhatsApp, Viber, and Facebook, by soliciting personal financial information under false pretenses.
To bolster community resilience against these threats, police are promoting discussions about common scams and advocating for responsible financial practices among families. By staying informed and vigilant, families can create a safer environment for themselves, resisting the lure of fraud.
In summary, the ongoing efforts to raise awareness and encourage careful financial behaviors are crucial as families navigate this critical back-to-school season. With a collective effort in promoting safety and vigilance, communities can work together to protect themselves from scams and foster a stronger, more supportive environment for all families.
