The Police M-PAiSA Task Force is intensifying efforts to combat the increased incidence of scams targeting the M-PAiSA platform, with fraudulent activities emerging as a significant concern, particularly during the ongoing disbursement of government financial assistance.

Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew, has urgently advised the public to exercise heightened vigilance, especially when withdrawing funds related to the Back to School Assistance, which amounts to $200. He emphasized the critical importance of parents and guardians not entrusting these tasks to children or unaccompanied individuals, highlighting that such precautions can help mitigate potential fraud and safeguard financial security.

Chew reiterated that many families are visiting various outlets, including Vodafone Fiji Limited, M-PAiSA agents, banks, or utilizing online platforms to access these funds during this financially sensitive period. “You don’t know who is at the sidelines exploring the opportunity to steal information or money,” he cautioned, underscoring the need for adults to manage these financial transactions directly.

The Acting Commissioner also stressed that individuals must be particularly cautious when sharing sensitive personal information, such as PINs and passwords. He noted that if funds are lost due to scams, the recovery process can be complicated and time-consuming, often requiring extensive law enforcement involvement.

This warning aligns with broader advisories from the Fiji Police regarding the surge of scams, particularly those targeting families during critical financial periods. Previous reports have highlighted the tactics employed by scammers via communication channels such as text messages, Viber, WhatsApp, and Facebook, all of which are often used to solicit unsolicited money requests or induce fear of missing out on certain benefits.

To combat these threats, the police are promoting community awareness and resilience, urging families to communicate openly about potential scams and share insights regarding safe financial practices. This proactive approach not only aims to protect individual interests but also fosters a supportive community environment where families can thrive without fear of exploitation.

In summary, diligence and caution are vital to ensuring the safety of finances as families navigate this critical back-to-school season. By remaining informed and proactive, communities can collectively bolster their defenses against financial exploitation and build a safer environment for all.
