The Fiji Police Mpaisa task force has arrested two individuals in connection with a fraudulent rental car scheme that exploited the mobile money transfer application. The suspects, identified as a 29-year-old man from Davuilevu and a 37-year-old woman from Koronivia, allegedly operated several fake Facebook accounts to mislead potential renters.
The scheme came to light after a resident from Nadi became a victim on September 17, losing $190 after sending funds via Mpaisa. Upon realizing he had been scammed, the victim promptly reported the incident to the Nadi Police.
The two accused face serious charges, including Obtaining Financial Advantage by Deception and Dishonestly Dealing with Personal Financial Information. They are set to appear in court at the Nasinu Magistrates Court today.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance when engaging in online transactions. As law enforcement agencies continue to crack down on such scams, there is hope that increased awareness will help protect individuals from falling prey to similar frauds in the future. It highlights the need for robust verification processes when using platforms for rentals and transactions.
