A 52-year-old man is facing charges from the Fiji Police Force’s M-Paisa Taskforce for allegedly acquiring financial gain through deceptive means. The incident reportedly occurred on September 8, 2023, when the accused is said to have deceitfully obtained $100 from a victim using M-Paisa, a mobile payment service.
According to police investigations, the victim discovered a car rental advertisement while browsing Facebook, which prompted the individual to pay a deposit to secure a vehicle. After sending the money, attempts to reach the driver by phone failed, leading the victim to report the situation to the Consumer Council. This report was subsequently handed over to the Fiji Police Force’s Criminal Investigation Department based in Suva.
The accused is scheduled to appear in the Nasinu Magistrates Court later today.
This incident underscores the importance of vigilance when engaging in online transactions, particularly on social media platforms. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, it is crucial for individuals to verify the legitimacy of offers and transactions to prevent similar scams. The swift action taken by the Consumer Council and the police highlights the collaborative efforts to ensure consumer protection in Fiji.
In the face of scams, community awareness and proactive reporting can serve as powerful deterrents against similar incidents in the future. It is hopeful that increased education about online safety will empower consumers, making them less susceptible to deceptive practices.
