A 52-year-old man faces charges from the Fiji Police Force’s M-Paisa Taskforce for allegedly committing fraud to gain financial benefit. According to reports, on September 8, 2023, the man deceitfully acquired $100 from a victim via M-Paisa.
The incident started when the victim was browsing Facebook and encountered a post related to car hire services. Believing it to be legitimate, the victim was instructed to make a deposit to secure a reservation for the vehicle. After sending the payment, the victim attempted to reach the driver but was unable to make contact.
Subsequently, the matter was reported to the Consumer Council, which escalated the issue to the Fiji Police Force’s Criminal Investigation Department in Suva for further action. The accused is set to appear in the Nasinu Magistrates Court later today.
This case is a reminder of the importance of vigilance in online transactions, as scams continue to evolve and become increasingly sophisticated. It is crucial for individuals to thoroughly verify any offers encountered on social media platforms to avoid falling victim to such deceptive practices.
