Sayed-Khaiyum’s Bold Call for Economic Change: Will Rabuka Listen?

Former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has urged Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to prioritize the economic well-being of all Fijians, especially those in vulnerable positions, in light of the ongoing global economic shifts. Sayed-Khaiyum emphasized that the government must safeguard the Fijian economy from the repercussions of changes in global policies and administrations, suggesting that the current focus on political distractions must be curtailed.

In recent social media remarks, Sayed-Khaiyum expressed concerns that the government has been sidetracked by issues such as commissions and constitutional changes, which he argues benefit only a select few. He accused certain political figures of exploiting these “side shows” for personal gain, which detracts from addressing pressing socio-economic challenges faced by ordinary Fijians.

Highlighting the deteriorating socio-economic landscape, Sayed-Khaiyum called on PM Rabuka to take immediate action to revitalize the economy. He noted the need for initiatives that inspire confidence among both Fijians and foreign investors, advocating for a focus on real solutions that will improve daily life for citizens.

He articulated that neglecting these socio-economic concerns could result in severe consequences for Fiji’s economic stability and the well-being of its populace, urging for positive measures that can be enacted to counter the decline. The former AG closed with a strong reminder of the potential peril facing the Fijian economy if proactive steps are not taken.

There is a glimmer of hope as Sayed-Khaiyum’s comments open up channels for dialogue, highlighting the need for cooperation and strategic planning aimed at fostering a more resilient economy. By emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the Fijian people’s needs, there is potential for the government to build a stronger, inclusive future.
