The residents of Sawani village in Naitasiri are taking significant steps to combat dengue fever by initiating a monthly clean-up campaign. This proactive measure was launched in response to a recent outbreak that left five villagers severely ill, a situation described by village headman Sekove Balemila as a life-threatening scare for the community.

Two weeks ago, the campaign kicked off with local volunteers working diligently to clean the village environment. “Our actions are critical following the near-fatal situations faced by our villagers,” Mr. Balemila stated. Equipped with gloves and garbage bins provided by the Ministry of Health, the community collectively undertook the task of collecting rubbish to create a healthier living space.

The clean-up initiative not only aims to protect residents’ health from further dengue outbreaks but also seeks to enhance the village’s overall appeal to tourists. With the influx of visitors each month, maintaining cleanliness is crucial for Sawani’s image.

Mr. Balemila expressed a commitment to ongoing collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Environment, emphasizing that sustained efforts are key to keeping the village safe and inviting.

This initiative echoes similar clean-up campaigns across Fiji, particularly those organized by community groups and local authorities responding to dengue outbreaks. For instance, other communities like Lami and Lautoka have demonstrated the impact of collective action in improving local environments and safeguarding public health by reducing mosquito breeding sites.

The involvement of Sawani villagers in this campaign showcases a hopeful and unified approach to public health management. Through such community-led efforts, there is optimism for effectively combatting diseases like dengue fever, ultimately fostering a healthier and safer environment for all.
