The president of the Savusavu Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Avikash Pillay, has expressed concern over the prolonged inoperability of the X-ray machine at the Savusavu sub-divisional hospital, which has remained out of service for over two months. Mr. Pillay articulated the community’s frustration, stating, “We have been waiting for the Ministry of Health and Medical Services to take action since the machine has been out of order.”
The X-ray machine had been semi-functional since July but became completely non-operational in October of the previous year. Patients, such as Ilisapeci Bola, have shared their experiences, describing the inconvenience of having to seek X-ray services at Zens Medical Centre, stating, “I come from Natewa, I know this hospital has all the equipment, but this is not the case. This is the only big hospital serving the people of Cakaudrove.”
Local businessman Aren Nunnink evaluated the machine and found that it requires a software upgrade to become operational again. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, expressing concern for the community’s health needs, particularly in emergencies. “Imagine if there is a car accident after 5pm and doctors need an urgent X-ray; where will they go and what will happen to the patients?” Mr. Nunnink has even offered to cover the repair costs himself, citing a local engineer who could fix the machine within 30 minutes.
Unfortunately, attempts to contact health authorities have been met with delays, as decision-makers are reportedly on annual leave. Mr. Nunnink underscored the willingness of local businesspeople to assist but expressed frustration over the lack of communication from health officials.
Despite an allocated budget of $12 million for maintaining and upgrading various health facilities in the 2024-2025 National Budget—which includes refurbishments for the Savusavu health facility—issues regarding the X-ray machine remain unaddressed.
This situation highlights a pressing need for timely communication and action from health authorities to ensure that residents have access to critical medical services.
In a positive light, the determination of local community members and business leaders to take initiative and offer solutions reflects a strong commitment to improving healthcare services in Savusavu. With proactive engagement, it is hopeful that the necessary repairs will be made swiftly, helping to facilitate essential medical care for the community.
