The president of the Savusavu Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Avikash Pillay, expressed his concern regarding the inoperative X-ray machine at the Savusavu sub-divisional hospital. The machine has been out of service for over two months, which has caused significant inconvenience for patients and healthcare providers in the area.
Pillay noted that the local business community is eager to assist in resolving the matter but is awaiting direction from the Ministry of Health and Medical Services. Since July, the machine had been partially functioning, but it became completely non-operational in October of the previous year. This situation has prompted patients, like Ilisapeci Bola from Natewa, to seek alternative locations for X-ray services, creating additional logistical challenges.
Local businessman Aren Nunnink examined the faulty machine and concluded that it requires a software upgrade to resume functionality. He emphasized the urgency of having the machine operational, particularly in emergencies, such as car accidents requiring immediate diagnostic imaging. Nunnink has even offered to pay for the necessary repairs, stating that a skilled local engineer could fix the issue within half an hour.
Despite efforts to reach out to health authorities, Nunnink reported being unable to connect due to officials being on annual leave. As the situation stands, communication from local leaders appears lacking, hindering the resolution process.
Moreover, the 2024-2025 National Budget allocates $12 million for capital improvements in various health facilities, which includes plans for upgrades at Savusavu’s health center. However, the ongoing issue with the X-ray machine remains unresolved, highlighting the pressing need for prompt action from health officials.
This situation reflects a broader challenge faced by health services in maintaining essential medical equipment, particularly in rural areas. The commitment from both local businesses and community leaders demonstrates a collective desire to enhance healthcare accessibility and efficiency. There is hope that with increased community involvement and funding from the government, solutions can be implemented swiftly, so residents of Savusavu can receive the quality healthcare they deserve.
