Savusavu’s X-Ray Dilemma: A Community in Waiting

Spread the love

The president of the Savusavu Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Avikash Pillay, is urging the Ministry of Health to address the ongoing issues with a non-functional X-ray machine at the Savusavu sub-divisional hospital. This essential medical equipment has been out of order for over two months, causing significant challenges for locals who rely on the facility.

Pillay expressed frustration that the business community is prepared to assist but is awaiting guidance from the ministry’s headquarters. Concerns were raised by patients like Ilisapeci Bola, who highlighted the inconvenience of needing to travel to Zens Medical Centre for X-rays, especially given the critical role this hospital plays in serving the Cakaudrove region, which includes the Prime Minister’s village.

Local businessman Aren Nunnink inspected the machine and suggested it requires a software upgrade to function properly. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, pointing out the potential risks to patients in emergencies, such as after a car accident, when immediate access to X-ray services is necessary.

Nunnink has offered to cover the costs for repairs, with a local engineer capable of fixing the machine in roughly 30 minutes. Despite his attempts to contact health authorities for assistance, he has faced challenges, including being informed that key officials are currently on annual leave.

Additionally, an email was sent to Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, the Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services, seeking an update on the matter, but no response has yet been received.

In the recently announced 2024-2025 National Budget, Finance Minister Biman Prasad allocated $12 million for significant maintenance works at Labasa Hospital and upgrades for urban and sub-divisional hospitals across the country, including the Savusavu health facility. An extra $3.8 million was designated for minor improvements nationwide; however, the unresolved issue with the X-ray machine highlights the need for prompt action and communication.

This situation underscores the vital need for the healthcare system to respond quickly to equipment failures that directly affect patient care. As local businesses stand ready to lend support, perhaps this could serve as a catalyst for improved collaboration between community stakeholders and health officials, ultimately ensuring better healthcare for everyone involved.

Summary: The president of Savusavu Chamber of Commerce is pressing for the Ministry of Health to fix a non-functional X-ray machine at a local hospital. Despite a significant budget allocation for health facility upgrades, the machine remains out of order, prompting local businesses to offer support and highlighting the urgent need for effective communication and action within the healthcare system.
